A welcomed return.
After more than two months out due to successive thigh and hamstring injuries, Dimitri Payet has finally returned to competition with Vasco da Gama. His comeback was met with enthusiasm from the fans, who cheered him during the last match against Bragantino (2-2) this Saturday.
Despite the mixed result at home, Payet was one of the best players on the field, demonstrating that he had not lost an ounce of his talent. His return is particularly important for Vasco da Gama, currently 11th in the standings with 24 points, a much more comfortable position compared to the fierce relegation battle of the previous season, and they could even find themselves competing at the top of the table if they manage their second half of the season well.

Payet’s performance was praised not only for his precise passes but also for his mobility and involvement in the game. He actively participated in the team’s goal and remained on the field until the 64th minute, after which he was replaced by Coutinho, with whom he seems to be sharing the number 10 role.
This appearance marks the first time Payet has played more than 60 minutes since the crushing 6-1 defeat against Flamengo in June, where he was substituted in the 58th minute.
Captivated audience, coach thrilled
Vasco Da Gama’s coach, Rafael Paiva, expressed optimism about Payet’s regained form. “This is the version of Payet we want. I think we are on the right track. Coutinho’s arrival has also contributed a lot to his happiness, having a player of that caliber alongside him. I think we are on the right track. Unfortunately, the victory did not come today. Things will start to improve, especially with him in better physical shape; he will bring us much more,” said Paiva.
Rafael Paiva also emphasized Payet’s willingness to stay on the field longer than expected. “We had planned for 45 minutes, but he asked to play longer. And he really played very well today; his second half was excellent. We see him lighter, more involved in all phases of the game. Today, he helped defend and often covered the midfielders who surpassed his line. And he is happy; I see him happy on the field, encouraging and cheering on the bench,” added the coach.
Payet’s performance was also recognized by the fans at São Januário. The midfielder was warmly applauded by the supporters as he left the field while the team was still leading Bragantino 2-1. Even after the equalizer at the end of the match, the Frenchman took a lap around the field to thank the fans for their support.
