The training of the Brazilian Women’s National Team this Saturday (20) took place in a stadium that symbolizes a lot for world football. It was exactly at the Chaban Delmas Stadium that Brazil won two matches and drew another in the 1938 World Cup, in front of an audience that was captivated by the football of Leônidas da Silva, the tournament’s top scorer, with seven goals. The arena was also used in the 1998 World Cup.
Chaban Delmas is also famous for having internationally showcased Zinédine Zidane. He played for Bordeaux after being transferred from Cannes and was not very well-known at the time. Gradually, from 1992 to 1996, during which Bordeaux performed very well, Zidane began to make a name for himself with his goals and stylish plays. His team always played at Chaban Delmas, which was named Parc Lescure until 2001.
It was while playing for Bordeaux that Zidane first joined the French national team in 1994. He also helped lead the club to the UEFA Cup final in 1996, where they ended up as runners-up against Bayern Munich. Due to his performance in the competition, he later transferred to Juventus, where he gained star status.

1938 World Cup
In 1938, the Brazilian Men’s National Team played two matches against Czechoslovakia and one against Sweden at the venue, in the match for third place in that World Cup. To reach France, the delegation traveled for 15 days aboard a steamship.
The first match at Chaban Delmas, on June 2, in the quarter-finals, ended in a 1-1 draw with Czechoslovakia, with a goal from Leônidas da Silva. Since the draw persisted in extra time, a new match between the two teams was necessary. This took place on June 14, with Brazil winning 2-1, with goals from Leônidas da Silva and Roberto.
In the semi-final, Brazil lost to Italy 2-1 in Marseille. Consequently, they returned to Bordeaux to compete for third place against Sweden. On June 19, at Chaban Delmas, they defeated the Europeans 4-2, with goals from Romeu, Perácio, and two from Leônidas da Silva.
In that World Cup, for the first time, fans could follow the broadcasts of the Brazilian National Team’s matches on the radio.
1998 World Cup
Chaban Delmas also hosted matches from the 1998 World Cup, six in total, none of which involved the Brazilian National Team. The arena, with a capacity of 34,000 people, has also hosted two World Cups in another sport, rugby – in 1999 and 2007.
