Eder Militao was sent off before the 10th minute as Real Madrid went on to lose 2-1 at home to Levante on Saturday afternoon.
Roger Marti made up for his earlier penalty miss by scoring the winning goal that condemned Los Blancos to a shock loss.
Real Madrid started the game brightly but all of their gameplan was altered when Brazilian defender Eder Militao got a straight red card for denying Levante player Sergio Leon a clear cut run at goal.
Regardless, Real Madrid took the lead via Marcos Asensio in the 13th minute after the forward controlled a pass from Toni Kroos and fired past Levante goalie Fernandez Abaris.
Levante were not giving up just yet and got a well-deserved equalizer in the 32nd minute. Luis Morales connected to a cross from Jorge Miramon and leveled matters from close range.
In the second half, Levante then got a chance to complete the comeback not long after the hour mark. However, Courtois was on par to save Marti’s penalty and keep his side in the game.
Marti would go on to amend for his penalty miss as he grabbed the comeback goal for Levante in the 78th minute. The away side held on to their lead and recorded a famous upset against the reigning champions.
The defeat leaves Real Madrid ten points behind leaders Atletico Madrid who have a game in hand. Barcelona can also overtake Los Blancos if they win their game against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night.
Real Madrid have now lost three out of their last four games, including bowing out of the Copa del Rey at the hands of Athletic Bilbao last week.
Los Blancos will be aiming for a return to winning ways when they take on Huesca on Saturday.
