More than five decades later, the hotel room where Pelé stayed during the 1970 World Cup was opened to the public. The room is now located in the current site of the Inter-American Conference of International Security (CISS in Spanish). In a tribute to the Brazilian star, the place where he stayed that year was remodeled just like O Rei saw it back in the day.

“That’s how you’ll find it: imagine that he left the room a couple of hours ago to play and win the World Cup,” said CISS charmain Alvaro Velarca, via Mexican outlet Jornada. The room was filled with objects of the 70s, like a dial telephone or a radio receiver, in addition to an old TV, where they also put a Pelé jersey.

The unforgettable 1970 World Cup of Pelé and Brazil

The 1970 Mexico World Cup lives long in the football community’s memory for many reasons. But it’s safe to say that we all associate it as the tournament where O Rei cemented his legacy. Of course, Pelé had already written history before, but that World Cup was simply the pinnacle of his fantastic career. It was his third World Cup title, a feat that no other player has been able to emulate so far.

For Brazilian fans it’s also a memorable edition since it saw them add a third star to their crest. And for world football in general, it reminisces one of, if not the greatest football team of all time. The likes of Gérson, Jairzinho, Rivellino and Tostão were the perfect partners for O Rei to establish himself as the most successful player in World Cup history. Brazil were merciless from the very beginning, and ended up being crowned with a commanding 4-1 win over Italy in front of a 100,000 crowd at the emblematic Estadio Azteca.
