Even though he had a lot of doubters at first, Abel Ferreira managed to leave his mark at Palmeiras. Since his arrival at the São Paulo-based club in November 2020, the Portuguese coach has already led Alviverde to seven trophies, including two Libertadores and consecutive Brasileirao titles in the last two seasons.

And his work hasn’t gone unnoticed outside Brazil. In addition to being linked with a lucrative offer from the Middle East, Ferreira has earned the admiration of his fellow countryman Bernardo Silva. In a press conference at the FIFA Club World Cup 2023, the Manchester City midfielder praised the Verdao coach.

Bernardo Silva, another fan of Brazilian football and Ferreira

“I try to watch Brazilian football and the Libertadores, but I didn’t watch the final. It’s something I try to follow when I can. Due to the time difference, it’s not as easy as I would like,” said the 29-year-old player, who is getting ready to face Fluminense after scoring in the semifinal against Urawa Red Diamonds.

Regarding the connection between Brazilian and Portuguese football, Silva explained that “Brazilians and Portuguese have a special connection,” and that’s why he tries to stay informed about the Brasileirao. In this regard, he spoke of his knowledge and respect for the current Palmeiras coach: “For example, Abel Ferreira, the manager of Palmeiras, is someone I know and admire a lot. I try to keep track of his games.”

When Silva was taking his first steps at Benfica, Ferreira was starting his journey in the youth categories of Sporting CP. They haven’t worked together yet, but they still have plenty of time to do so.
