Luciano 14th minute goal over Sport Recife put São Paulo further ahead in the lead in the Brazilian Championship standings. Still having a game in hand, the home side leads the pile with 47 points, four more ahead of the next rival Atletico-MG.
Sport Recife who had no shots on target throughout the game sits one point out of the relegation zone after playing more games than Vasco. São Paulo remains unbeaten while Sport goes four games without a single win to their name.
São Paulo started the game with great intensity, dominated play and created loads of chances in the first few minutes of the first half. Chances came from Brenner, Luciano and Igor Gomes but their efforts were saved by Luan Polli.
The goal didn’t take long to arrive. In the 14th minute, following a corner kick situation, Luciano opened the scoring after a well-rehearsed move with an assist from Daniel Alves.
Sport on the other hand, didn’t threaten much and only got three shots at goal that were barely on target. São Paulo almost got their second before the break via a Gabriel Sara free kick but his effort was wide.
São Paulo continued to dominate play in the second half although they failed to convert their chances to another goal on the evening. In the 61st minutes, they almost doubled their lead. Reinaldo made a run on the left and crossed to an open Luciano but he sent his effort over the bar. The game ended that way with São Paulo taking the victory.
São Paulo have a game on Wednesday against Botafogo for a late game that should have been played in the 18th round. Following that game, they have a big match against Corinthians on Sunday. Sport also have a game on Sunday against Coritiba.
