Grêmio not only won, but have won Inter classic after classic. On Wednesday, Tricolor beat Colorado 1-0 at Beira-Rio, for the 4th round of Group E of the continental competition and reached the 10th unbeaten clash over their biggest rivals.
Pepê scored the winning goal, the first ever in a Libertadores Gre-Nal.
Despite Gremio being superior in the first half, there were few chances created from either side and it was a somewhat dull affair with both sides looking to play cautious.
Second half is where things got heated up. Inter came back from the break with an aggressive stance and created the classic"s first big chance in the 57th minute. Boschilia sent in a cross that was met by Thiago Galhardo"s head. The striker forced Vanderlei to make a great save. Gremio started to take over after that and it soon paid off. Pepê found himself clear on goal in the 74th minute and left the goalkeeper with no chance.
Inter tried and tried but couldn’t secure an equalizer late on.
With the victory, Grêmio equals Inter at the top of the standings with seven points in Group E. Colorado remains in the lead due to the goal difference – three to one. Tricolor are currently the runners-up.
The two rivals will return to the field for the Libertadores next Tuesday. Grêmio receives the Universidad Católica at the Arena. In a much later clash on the same day, Inter will take América de Cali at Pascual Guerrero in Cali.
But first, the focus is on Brasileirão, also with two games on Saturday valid for the 12th round. Colorado faces São Paulo in Beira-Rio. Grêmio goes to Mineirão to face Atlético-MG.
