In a game of two struggling sides, it was Botafogo who came out on top on Saturday night in Couto Pereira. After going a goal down via a goal from Coritiba’s Neilton, two late goals from Pedro saw Botafogo claim a comeback win to end a five-game winless run in the Brasilerao.
For Coritiba, the result compounded their struggles in the Brazilian Championship so far. It was a case of poor defending that saw them take home nothing from the game.
After a decent showing all game, a lapse in concentration allowed Pedro Raul to head home in the 75th minute for Botafogo’s equalizer. There was to be some drama late on.
Seven minutes after the equalizer, VAR was called into action. Matheus brought down a player in this goal area and gifted the visitors a penalty. Pedro Raul stepped up to complete the comeback and score his second to put Botafogo 2-1 up.
The game was looking all but over before the home side were also awarded a penalty after the check by VAR three minutes into extra time
Monteiro J. S. was poised to level things up for his side to share a point with Botafogo but he sent his effort over and failed to score. It was a disappointing way for Coritiba to fall to another defeat.
Coritiba remain rooted to the relegation zone in 19th place while Botafogo are one spot ahead in 18th place with two points more. Coritiba have it all to do as they face yet another tough outing against Athletico-PR for their next game.
Botafogo also go into a difficult fixture against Corinthians on Sunday as they looked to find some momentum in search for safety in the relegation battle.
