Argentina, seeking to defend the title won two years ago at the Maracanã, will be in Group A, while Mexico will be in Group B thanks to their recent Gold Cup succeess. Host country United States will lead Group C as the best CONCACAF team according to the latest FIFA ranking, and Brazil will lead Group D as the best CONMEBOL team after the reigning champion Argentina.
For the draw, the competition rules state that no group can have more than three CONMEBOL teams or more than two CONCACAF teams. If this condition is not met during the draw, the team will move to the next available group in alphabetical order.
