Fluminense settled for a 1-1 draw against Junior Barranquilla on Thursday, and remain nine games unbeaten. Ex-Palmeiras striker Borja struck first from the penalty spot in the 11th minute, before Kayky drew level nine minutes later.
The game was leaning towards the Colombians side for the win, but Roger Machado would have been left pleased with the performances of young trio, Kayky, Luiz Henrique and Calegari, made sure that didn’t happen.
In the opening minute of the game, Kayky tried to get the ball off Fuentes inside the goal area, but his challenge was hard and he gave away a penalty, allowing Borja to convert and give the home side the lead.
However, it didn’t take long for the visitors to equalize. In the 20th minute, Kayky atoned for his earlier mistake and drew level after taking advantage of Luccas Claro’s deflected header following a corner kick.
In the second period, Fluminense went out of gas, although Fred almost scored with a header, but his effort was kept out by goalkeeper Viera.
Colombian forward Pajoy had three great opportunities from outside the area, but only one hit the cross bar, while the other two were off target.
With the point gained, Fluminense maintain their unbeaten run in the Libertadores and remain leaders in Group D, although just ahead of second-place River Plate via a mere goal difference.
Fluminense will host Santa Fe in their next fixture on Wednesday next week, at the Maracanã. Elsewhere, Junior Barranquilla faces River Plate at home the same day.
On Sunday, however, Fluminense will face Portuguesa for the semi-final of the Campeonato Carioca.
