Rayo Vallecano officially announced the signing of James Rodríguez, who recently shone at the 2024 Copa América with Colombia but had a brief and tumultuous stint at São Paulo. He arrives as a free agent after terminating his contract, which he signed less than a year ago with the Tricolor paulista.
The midfielder only played 22 matches for the Brazilian team and scored two goals. He was close to leaving at the end of the year, but ultimately had to stay, following a request for forgiveness for trying to force a departure.

That saga also ended abruptly: Luis Zubeldía arrived, and the coach did not consider him. It became clear once again that his future lay elsewhere, with a desire to return to Europe after being named the best player of the Copa América.
Finally, the 33-year-old player will return to Madrid, where he wore the Real Madrid jersey from 2014 to 2020, with two years on loan in between at Bayern Munich. Before joining the white club, he enjoyed glory at Banfield, Porto, and Monaco, while after that experience, he faced a decline with poor experiences at Everton, Al-Rayyan, and Olympiakos.
“The club thus signs its star player in what is its most special season, celebrating 100 years of history; of bravery, courage, and nobility,” stated Rayo Vallecano in a press release. The institution also clarified that the official presentation will not take place during the match tomorrow at the Estadio de Vallecas, where the local team will face FC Barcelona in LaLiga.
