Uruguayan consul updates on Izquierdo’s condition

Last Monday (26), Uruguayan consul Marta Echarte visited the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, where Juan Izquierdo is hospitalized in the ICU, and spoke with the Uruguayan press.

In her statement to radio Sport 890, Echarte revealed that the defender’s situation is extremely delicate and “practically irreversible.” She highlighted that, after discussions with Nacional’s president, Alejandro Balbi, and Izquierdo’s family, the main concern now is brain damage.

“We met with Nacional’s president, Alejandro Balbi, and Juan Izquierdo’s family. The situation is very delicate, practically irreversible, and we are waiting to see what will happen in the next 48 hours. The brain damage is what concerns us the most right now. We spoke with the doctors, and initially, it was a cardiac problem, an arrhythmia, but then it complicated, and there was progression and brain involvement, as reported in the medical report. Now they are providing respiratory assistance to him.”

Critical condition

Juan Izquierdo has been in the ICU at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital since last Thursday (22), when he suffered a sudden health issue during the match against São Paulo in the Libertadores. At that time, the defender collapsed on the Morumbi field and required immediate medical attention from both teams, being transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Latest medical bulletin

The latest medical bulletin released by the hospital last Monday (26) indicates that the defender remains in critical neurological condition and is being maintained on mechanical ventilation.

Tests conducted on Sunday (25) revealed “progression of brain impairment” and increased intracranial pressure, further complicating the Uruguayan player’s condition.

Initially, doctors diagnosed a cardiac arrhythmia that led to the cardiac arrest, but the situation evolved into significant brain impairment.
