Internacional suffered a bitter blow on Thursday as they narrowly missed out on the title. It’s all celebrations in the Flamengo camp and Inter would be left thinking it could have been them in that position.
With Inter trailing Flamengo by two points prior to their final fixture against Corinthians, there was hope of a title win on the very last day. That hope was further fueled as Flamengo lost to Sao Paulo by a 2-1 fixture.
However, Inter could not capitalize on the dropped points by Fla and ended up playing a goalless stalemate with Corinthians. In the end, they missed out on the title by a mere point.
It was a dramatic night for Inter in Biera Rio as they saw two goals disallowed for offside after a VAR review. In fact, the reaction from Edenilson pretty much told the whole story. If that wasn’t enough, they also saw a penalty overturned after a VAR review as well.
After the final whistle, all the Inter players collapsed to the ground in despair and disappointment.
There was further disappointment for Thiago Galhardo who narrowly missed out on the top-scorer award. Bragantino’s Claudinho and Sao Paulo’s Luciano shared the coveted price with 18 goals apiece.
It comes as a bitter blow for Inter who led for a good part of the competition until they surrendered their lead at the top in the penultimate round.
A poor run of just one win in their last five games saw Inter lose their grip at the top of the table. Looking back at it all, the recent 2-1 loss to Flamengo was the one game that ultimately decided their season.
It’s another disappointing end to the campaign and they’ll have to try again next season.
