Corinthians and Inter played out to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at the Neo Química Arena. The game was valid for the ninth round of the Brazilian Championship.
Edenilson, taking a penalty in the first half, placed the Colorado in the lead. Just when it seemed like Inter would nick the win, Jo equalized for Corinthians in the last 10 minutes of the game.
The match in Itaquera was marked by controversy in the penalty awarded in favor of the Gauchos, as Victor Cuesta was offside when he was charged in the area.
The controversial call
Jô’s penalty on Victor Cuesta sparked so much controversy it took four minutes of VAR analysis. And, in the opinion of commentator Salvio Spinola, the decision to keep the field mark was correct. The explanation: although Victor Cuesta was offside, he and Jô didn’t get to participate in the play – and that’s why the penalty should be awarded. Others claimed the penalty shouldn’t have been given in any way as the offside players might have affected play in some way.
The bid caused quite the scene from Corinthians players on the field and pressure from managers in the tunnel. During the break, directors of Timão, including the club president, Duilio Monteiro Alves, questioned the decision of referee Marcelo de Lima Henrique.
In the end, Corinthians managed to pull one back to see the game end square. We can only imagine the scenes and post-match comments had Timão went on to lose that match.
The result kept both teams skating in the standings. Corinthians are in tenth place, with 11 points, one more than Inter, in 14th.
Inter returns to the field on Wednesday. Another crunch clash awaits as they welcome São Paulo to Beira-Rio. A day later, Corinthians visits Chapecoense in a late night fixture.
