After the great performance of the Brazilian Under-17 Team in the second round of the World Cup against New Caledonia, where the team won an impressive 9-0 victory at the International Stadium in Jakarta, behind the scenes reveal meticulous care in the players’ recovery.
Members of the Brazilian National Team Technical Committee, physical trainer Juninho and physiologist Leandro Spigolon, detailed the strategies implemented to ensure that players are fully prepared for the next challenge. This Wednesday (15), the athletes participated in physical and regenerative training sessions at the National Team’s concentration facilities in Indonesia.
Juninho, the physical trainer for the Brazilian Under-17 team, highlighted the emphasis on active recovery, dividing players into two groups based on game load.
“Today we emphasized active recovery, separating the groups into those who played longer and those who had shorter minutes. The work included myofacial release techniques, mobility and activities in the pool for the first group, while the second performed strength and stimuli on the treadmill”, he revealed.
The physical trainer also highlighted the importance of these activities in the recovery process, highlighting that the stress caused by the game and the inflammatory spike require specific care. Strict monitoring of athletes’ well-being, control of water loss, sleep and nutrition are an integral part of the routine, aiming for quick recovery and better performance game by game.
“We try to control every detail, staying on top of them, emphasizing what they need to recover faster, with individual strategies aligned with the medical and physiology department”, stated Juninho.

Physiology in action: hydration, nutrition and rapid recovery
Leandro Spigolon, team physiologist, complemented the explanation by explaining the physiological intensity required by the U17 World Cup. He emphasized the crucial role of physiology in quickly analyzing data and planning training sessions to optimize athletes’ recovery.
“The World Cup in itself is an event that generates many physiological demands for the athlete. All games are of a high level, so athletes deliver a lot of performance in all matches. The role of physiology in a tournament like this is to analyze the this data as quickly as possible, understand how these athletes are finishing this match, what was the strain imposed by the competition. And in this short period that we have of 72 hours between one game and another, along with physical preparation, we need to organize the training sessions so that they have adequate stimuli at that time and that enhance their recovery”, highlighted Spigolon.
“Physiology goes hand in hand with physical preparation, medicine and physiotherapy, monitoring the athletes’ recovery curve for the next game, which will also demand a lot from the athlete”, he added.
