The 2024 season has the potential to be special for São Paulo. After all, the Tricolor Paulista has recently clinched two unprecedented titles. Under the leadership of Dorival Júnior, the São Paulo team became the Copa do Brasil champions in September 2023 and, in February of this year, they were crowned champions of the Supercopa do Brasil, now under Thiago Carpini.

In addition to the titles won, which were the only ones missing from the extensive collection of Morumbi’s team, the club will once again compete in the Libertadores in 2024. In 2022 and 2023, São Paulo did not qualify for the continental tournament, last participating in 2021. But how many Libertadores titles does the Tricolor have? Check below.

The only Brazilian club to win it all

With the Copa do Brasil victory in 2023 and the Supercopa do Brasil triumph in early February this year, São Paulo became the only Brazilian club to lift all possible trophies: six Brazilian Championships, three Libertadores, one Copa Sudamericana, Recopa, three Club World Cups, and a total of 22 Campeonato Paulista titles.
Return of the Supercopa

The discussion about being “champion of everything” resurfaced after the return of the Supercopa do Brasil, involving the winners of the Copa do Brasil and the Brazilian Championship. The tournament was absent from the Brazilian football calendar between 1992 and 2019.

São Paulo’s Libertadores Titles

1992

In this year, São Paulo lifted the trophy of the continental competition for the first time, a feat that would become an obsession for the club’s fans. The finals were played between June 10 and 17, 1992, against Newell’s Old Boys from Argentina. In the first leg, the Argentine team won 1-0. In the decisive match at Morumbi Stadium, Tricolor matched the score and won on penalties.

1993

The following year, the São Paulo team sought to defend their Libertadores title. This time, they faced Universidad Católica from Chile between May 19 and 26, 1993. In the first leg at Morumbi Stadium, São Paulo defeated the Chileans 5-1. Despite losing 2-0 in the second leg, Tricolor claimed the title.

2005

Another historic year for Tricolor. The team featuring Rogério Ceni, Lugano, Mineiro, and company became the Brazilian club with the most Libertadores titles in a final against Athletico-PR. The two final matches were played between July 6 and 14, 2005. The first leg in Paraná ended in a 1-1 draw. In the decisive match at Morumbi Stadium, São Paulo secured a 4-0 victory, with Rogério Ceni lifting the trophy.
