It was another game that didn’t follow the script once again. Sevilla came into this game on an impressive form, winning their last nine games in all competitions, with a good number of clean sheets as well. On the other hand, Dortmund had a patchy run of results of late and the Spanish side were tagged favorites to win.
Sevilla did start the game brightly after Suso’s shot deflected off Matt Hummels only after seven minutes to give Julen Lopetegui’s men the lead. The game soon took a twist as Dahoud levelled matters with a brilliant long-range effort in the 19th minute.
Not long after, Erling Haaland would go on to steal the headlines. The Norwegian sensation put his side ahead after a nice one-two with Jadon Sancho before firing past the Sevilla goalkeeper.
Just before half-time, Haaland added another which marked for his 18th goal after just 13 Champions League games. It is quite remarkable to say the least.
Late on, substitute De Jong pulled one back for Sevilla to give them hope ahead of the second leg.
It was a disappointing night for Brazilian duo Diego Carlos and Fernando. Carlos has been one of the standout defenders in Europe since last season and it’s no surprise he is also in contention to win the latest edition of the Samba Gold award.
However, he had a night to forget against Borussia Dortmund and was even suspect for their first goal. He simply could not keep up with the pace and trickery of Haaland.
Fernando was quite better early on and even found Suso in space for Sevilla’s opener. However, he dropped performances afterwards.
Diego Carlos has a reputation for scoring important goals for Sevilla. He’ll be looking to do just that and perhaps inspire his side to a win for the second leg on the 9th of March.
