Grêmio became the first semi-finalist of the Copa do Brasil 2020 after yet another victory on Wednesday. After winning the first leg by 2-1, Tricolor confirmed their favoritism and dispatched Cuiabá with another 2-0 win on Wednesday afternoon at the Arena in Porto Alegre. Diego Souza scored the two winning goals in the first half coming with two assists from Pepê. It was the eighth consecutive victory for Renato Portaluppi’s team this season.
With the two goals scored, Diego Souza became even more isolated as Grêmio’s top scorer this season.
The forward already has 18 goals from 35 games played. Four of them came in his last three matches. It is true that he had a little help from Pepê who was responsible for the two assists. However, with these numbers, the 35-year-old striker does not have much to worry about Diego Churín’s shadow in the Gremista attack.
At this stage, there is no reason why Grêmio shouldn’t be considered as one of the sides that can go all the way for silverware. Especially when it comes to the Copa do Brasil. Second biggest champion of the tournament, with five titles, Tricolor reached the semifinals for the 15th time in its history, the second in a row. The team from Rio Grande do Sul also became the record holder of games in the competition, with 187 matches. They are the second with more victories: 105, just one shy of 106 held by Flamengo.
With two wins in two games, Grêmio advances in the Brazil Cup and will face São Paulo in the semifinals. In the first leg, the São Paulo beat Flamengo 2-1 at Maracanã and also recorded another 3-0 win against Fla in Morumbi to make it a 5-1 aggregate in total.
