On Saturday night, Tricolor beat Ceará 4-2 at the Arena in a game for the 21st round of the competition. Jean Pyerre, Pepê and Diego Souza scored for the Gaucho team in the first half and Diego Churín completed the rout in the second. Kelvin and Tiago scored for Ceará but they turned out to be consolation goals. It was Grêmio’s fourth consecutive victory in the championship.
With the victory, Grêmio reaches 33 points, overtakes Fluminense and are now up to seventh place in the table, five points from the new leader, Atlético-MG.
Tricolor still has a late game to play for the 6th round, against Goiás on the 30th.
Ceará, on the other hand, remain at 24 points, in 13th place and also have a game in hand.
After being beaten 3-0 by Palmeiras in the middle of the week and getting complicated in the quarterfinals of the Brazil Cup, Ceará suffered their second consecutive defeat and saw their undefeated run come to an end in the Brasileirão. Guto Ferreira’s team came from a sequence of six matches without defeat in the competition – draws with Sport, Botafogo, Fluminense and Athletico and victories against Coritiba and Corinthians.
The two teams return to the field at midweek for the Copa do Brasil. On Wednesday, Grêmio faces Cuiaba at the Arena, for the return game of the quarterfinals. On the same day, Ceará receives Palmeiras at Castelão. For the Brasileirão, the team from Rio Grande do Sul visits Corinthians next Sunday while Ceará plays again at home against Atlético-MG also on Sunday.
