Corinthians and Grêmio drew 0-0 on Sunday night, at Neo Química Arena for the 22nd round of the Brasileirão. It was a game marred with lots of controversies than by the quality of football. The São Paulo team, however, had more reason to celebrate the result. Timão had Marlon and Otero sent off in controversial fashions. Regardless, they not only went above and beyond to withstand the pressure of the team from Rio Grande do Sul but also had the best chance of winning.
Grêmio saw more than 60% of possession but failed to create real clear cut chances at the Corinthians’ goal.
Both goalkeepers also had to make saves of their own to keep their sides in the game. Altogether, Grêmio will feel like it is a game they should have taken all three points from.
The result is not good for either team on the Brasileirão standings. Grêmio see their run of four consecutive wins in the Brazilian Championship come to an end. They find themselves in eight place with 34 points so far. Corinthians, on the other hand, reaches 26 points and are in 13th place, just two points ahead of Atlético-GO, 17th and first team in the relegation zone.
The two teams return to the field at midweek. On Wednesday (25), Corinthians will visit Coritiba at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), at Couto Pereira for the 23rd round of the Brasileirão. Grêmio will go to Paraguay on Thursday (26) to face Guaraní for the first leg of the Libertadores round of 16.
