The victory was the fourth in a row and the only goal was scored by Thaciano before the half hour mark in the second half.
The home side dominated a great section of the match but not the score line.
The visiting team didn’t play a great game but had a guaranteed qualification. The draw of the next phase will be defined by lottery on Friday morning.
From the start of the first half, Juventude dominated the game and was pressing the opposition half constantly, while Grêmio sat back in their defence and relied more on counterattacks. However, the best chance of the game came in the 34th minute. Papo had no clear chance to score but was able to force a save out of Vanderlei with the shots coming from Dalberto and Igor from outside the area.
Grêmio came close to getting past Carné’s goal with a long ball from Ferreira and also in a play that ended in a chance by Diego Souza which was stopped by Bareiro over the line.
Maicon was substituted at the stroke of half time with a muscle injury.
The second half resumed like the first, with the home side dominating the possession of the ball. Juventude hit the post with Igor and were knocking on the Tricolor area. Grêmio, on the other hand, improved their game with the entry of Jean Pyerre. It was the presence of the young player that the team started to create opportunities and reach the goal in the 70th minute. But they did so to no avail.
Thaciano scored the only goal of the game following a cross from Diego Souza and the game ended that way.
