Grêmio trashed Aragua 8-0 on Thursday. It took tricolor 28 minutes to cement their claim in the game after scoring six times already with three different scorers and an own goal.
Ferreira and Luiz Morais both bagged braces while Diego Souza, and Arquimides Hernandez (own goal) were all on target, before Maicon from the penalty spot and Diego Churin made it 8-0 before the final whistle in the second half. The rout saw Tricolor record their greatest victory in the competition.
Grêmio were in full control of the game from the very start, and it became embarrassing for Aragua as it seemed every opportunity the hosts got, turned out to be a goal.
Early in the 3rd minute, Luiz Morais opened the scoring, before doubling it 15 minutes later.
In the 21st minute, Diego Souza converted a penalty to make it three-nil, before Ferreira scored a brace in a space of two minutes, not long later. Without much to play for Aragua again, Hernandez added to the visitor’s misery and scored an own goal, in the 28th minutes.
Aragua managed to have one shot on target in the first half from six shots taken on goal. They had an additional one in the second half, with little chances created.
Maicon got his name on the score sheet in the second half through the spot kick, making it 7-0 before Diego Churin who replaced Diego Souza at half time rounding it off with a goal of his own.
Grêmio will play their last game of the group stage when they host Lanús next Thursday. Before that game, they will face Caxias in Porto Alegre to decide on a place in the Gauchão final on Sunday.
