Tricolor conceded an own goal few seconds after Robson missed a penalty in the 53rd minute and suffered for most of the final period of the game. But in the final minutes of the extra time, Diego Souza converted a penalty leveling up the score line and guaranteed group E top spot for his team. With the late goal, América missed out of the tournament next stage.

In the second half, the game started out promising, but ended in a very short time and in a disappointing manner. Grêmio came back into the game better and they created lot of chances but were unable to convert them. The best chance of the game came from a penalty spot won by Luiz Fernando. But Robinho was unable to convert the chance and put his side in the lead. Few seconds later, Kannemann scored an own goal.
In the 92nd minute, Kannemann received his second yellow card of the game and was sent off, mounting more pressure for his side. But, in the last move of the game, Diego Souza converted a penalty for his side and managed to get a draw, finishing top and dropping América out of the tournament.
