Grêmio continued their charge for the top spots of the Brasileirão following a 2-1 victory over Goiás on Monday afternoon in the Arena. The game was valid for a delayed match of the sixth round.
Grêmio were largely dominant in the game and goals from Jean Pyerre and Maicon
sealed the crucial three points for Tricolor to stay within touching distance of the top-placed teams. João Marcos pulled one back for Goiás but it turned out to be a mere consolation goal.
The day was also a special one for Renato Portaluppi who hi t another huge milestone for Grêmio. He oversaw his 384th game as a coach and with that number set the record for the manager with most games to his name in the club’s competition. Prior to the start of the game, the coach saw a video complied by the club played in his honor. He was also presented with a special jersey with the number ‘384’ customized on it to make the occasion.
The victory sees Grêmio move up to seven place and just five points off first-place Atletico Mineiro. On the other hand, Goiás remain 20th and rooted to the bottom of the Brazilian Championship.
For their next outing, Grêmio will host Vasco next Sunday for their upcoming Brasileirão fixture. Before that game, they will first of all host faces Guaraní-PAR for the return leg of the Libertadores round of 16. Goiás will play a crunch clash against Atlético-GO a day later in Goiânia.
