With a brilliant outing in the second half, Goiás claimed a surprise comeback win as they beat Santos 4-3 in Vila Belmiro on Sunday night.
Santos started the game as the much better side and it didn’t take long for them to open the scoring.
Lucas Braga gave Pexie the lead in the 7th minute and Kaio Jorge doubled his side’s advantage in the 38th minute; this time the assist coming from goal-scorer Braga.
Goiás looked down but not out for sure. The Emerald team returned a much better side in the second half and staged a stunning comeback over the hosts. Within the space of 23 minutes, Goiás scored four goals and the comeback was complete.
Rafael Moura grabbed a brace with Fernandão and David Duarte grabbing goals as well. Santos ensured a tense ending when Marinho got a late penalty in the 87th minute which he scored. Santos pushed hard for a late equalizer but Goiás did just enough to hold on and win the game.
The victory took Goiás up to 29 points and 18th place on the standings. They are currently six points from Fortaleza, the first team out of the relegation zone. On the other hand, Santos remains at 45 points and lost their ground in the push to move into the top six.
For their next outing, Santos will play against Atlético-MG on Tuesday in a late game for the 28th round. Then, on Saturday, Peixe has a big game as they take on Palmeiras in the final of the Libertadores at Maracanã.
Goiás, on the other hand, will take on Fluminense this coming Sunday as they look to stage yet another unexpected win.
