Germán Cano’s outstanding year in Brazil did not go unnoticed in the rest of the world, especially in Argentina. Despite spending most of his career outside his home country, the Fluminense striker made a name for himself thanks to outstanding performances in Brazil.

The 35-year-old made such an impact that he’s been nominated for the 2023 Olimpia Awards in the football category, where he will compete against Lionel Messi, Emiliano Martínez, and Sergio Romero. Curiously, Cano scored against Romero in the Copa Libertadores final, where his team defeated Boca Juniors at the Maracana in an epic game.

Germán Cano’s nomination is a great recognition by itself

The Olimpia Awards recognize Argentine athletes from 46 different sports who have shone throughout the calendar year. Additionally, the golden Olimpia (Olimpia de Oro in Spanish) is awarded to the best athlete across all sports.

Cano earned his place in the shortlist by scoring an impressive 40 goals in 59 matches in 2023. With 13 goals, he was the 2023 Copa Libertadores top scorer, playing an instrumental role in Fluminense’s first-ever continental success. Since the 2022 World Cup meant a lot for Argentina, Messi and Martínez probably lead the race for the prize, but Cano’s mere presence among the nominees already speaks volumes about his recent performances.
