In another historic season, in which he established himself once and for all in the hall of Fluminense’s great idols, Germán Cano ends 2023 with the continent’s highest individual honor. After being a key player in achieving Eternal Glory (the Libertadores title), the Argentine striker was elected this Sunday (12/31) the King of America in 2023.
Fluminense’s number 14 was the most voted in the traditional award promoted by the Uruguayan newspaper “El País” since 1986. Cano received 167 votes, against 40 for Luis Suárez (Grêmio). Jhon Arias received six votes, André, four, and Marcelo, two.

After a memorable 2022, with 44 goals scored with the tricolor shirt, Germán Cano shined again in 2023, this time even more decisive. With 40 goals, the number 14 was the protagonist of a historic year for the Team de Guerreiros, with the Conmebol Libertadores and the second Carioca championship titles, competitions in which he was the top scorer.
The King of America is one of many individual awards that Germán Cano has received since his arrival at Fluminense. This year, in addition to artillery, he was chosen as the best striker and the best player in the Campeonato Carioca. The number 14 has also reached important milestones and surpassed historical records.
In the Libertadores, he found the back of the net 13 times, one of them in the 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors in the grand final at Maracanã, on November 4th.
