Gabriel Jesus scored the only goal of the game on Saturday afternoon as Manchester City cemented their position at the top of the Premier League table. The Citizens claimed a narrow 1-0 victory against Sheffield United.
The game started in good fashion for Manchester City as they looked to impose themselves early on.
Sheffield recently beat Manchester United at Old Trafford but there was to be no upset at the Etihad.
It took Manchester City only nine minutes to break the deadlock. Ferran Torres showed good determination and footwork to beat two defenders on the flank before sending a pass to Jesus who only had to control the ball and slot it past the Sheffield goalkeeper.
The goal was perhaps relief for the Brazilian forward who finally ended a nine-game goal drought in the Premier League.
Jesus last scored in the league against Liverpool back in November 2020 and his strike against Sheffield was only his third goal of the season. The 23-year-old alongside teammates Fernandinho and Ederson are in the running to win the Samba Gold 2020 award. The winner is set to be announced in February.
Gabriel Jesus has struggled a lot this season with injuries and coronavirus and admitted he was delighted to get off the mark after a long spell without a goal.
"It’s important [to end his goal drought]. To play for a top club I have to score." he said to BBC after the game.
"Today we didn’t have the space to play. I have the first chance, I scored and that’s good for me and the team."
With the victory, Manchester City set a club record of 12 consecutive league wins and they’ll be hoping to extend it to 13 when they take on Burnley for their next fixture.
