A toothless Arsenal side suffered yet another humiliating defeat at the Emirates as they were handed a 4-1 defeat by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Arsenal’s second choice goalkeeper Alex Runarsson had a game to forget.
The Gunners came into the game with a poor run of form and City were seen as favorites to win the quarter-final fixture of the Carabao Cup.
City got off to a flying start when Gabriel Jesus connected with a Zinchenko cross to score the first goal of the game just after three minutes with a header. The Arsenal goalkeeper was the culprit for that.
City dominated play afterwards but Arsenal got the equalizer against the run of play when another Brazilian in Gabriel Martinelli sent in a cross for Alexandre Lacazette to also head home in the 31st minute.
The 19-year-old who only returned from a six-month injury also had to be taken off shortly after the start of the second half.
It then got worse for Arsenal when Mahrez doubled City’s with a free-kick just at the edge of the box in the 54th minute. The ball went straight at Runarsson but the Arsenal goalie made a basic error to let the ball in.
Five minutes later, Phil Foden made it 3-0 after he met a pass from Fernandinho with a lovely finish. He Replays showed he was offside but the competition are yet to introduce VAR.
Laporte eventually made it four and completed the rout with a header in the 73rd minute to cap off a convincing win for City and a miserable day for the Gunners.
