Fortaleza defeated Corinthians 1-0 in Arena Castelo on Sunday night, to climb up to fourth place in the Brazilian Championship table thanks to a spectacular goal from Robson. The Ceará team dominated the game, particularly in the first half, and ended Timao’s six-game winning streak on the road (two wins and four draws).
Fortaleza dominated the first half, with 12 shots to Corinthians’ four, and put pressure on Cassio’s goal by controlling the attacking area.
David got the game started by taking a hazardous long shot in the first minute, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Robson made it 1-0 in the 19th minute with another excellent long-range shot. The attacker got the better of Timao’s defensive lines and fired a superb shot.
At halftime, Sylvinho made two changes, bringing in Roni and Araos to replace Cantillo and Vitinho. In order to keep the ball and prevent Fortaleza from dominating the game, the coach wanted to change the game’s dynamics and improve the team’s internal mobility. Felipe Alves, Fortaleza’s goalkeeper, was also replaced by Marcelo Boeck during the halftime break due to injury.
Timão had the majority of possession in the second half but were unable to capitalize and equalize, missing the target three times.
Fortaleza proceeded in search of a second goal, with Sylvinho changing his line-up even further, but they were unable to score and had to settle for a 1-0 lead.
Fortaleza and Corinthians will return to the Brasileiro for the 12th round on Saturday. Leao will face Sao Paulo at Morumbi, while Timão will face Atlético-MG, at Neo Qumica Arena.
