The result was a tale of two sides. It was relief for Fortaleza on one side and on the other hand, it left Botafogo in a very delicate situation on the log standings. In a highly disputed game at the Nilton Santos stadium, Fortaleza managed to impose themselves and claim a much needed win over Botafogo who remain in the relegation zone of the Brazilian Championship.
The result was relief also for coach Marcelo Chamusca who claimed his first win as manager of the club.
For Botafogo, they have now failed to win in their last five games and it’s no surprise they are only ahead of rock-bottom Goiás on the standings. Slow in the ball and in the creation, Botafogo had a lot of difficulty with the marking of Fortaleza and created little chances of their own to score. The visitors’ goals were from Bergson and David. Warley, who replaced Caio Alexandre, pulled one back for his team late on but the goal only turned out to be a mere consolation.
With the defeat, their third consecutive one, Botafogo continues with 20 points and occupies the bitter penultimate position in the table of the Brazilian Championship. Fortaleza, which in turn have not won six games (five for the Brazilian and one for the Brazilian Cup), finally claim a win and are up to 28 points in 11th place. Both teams return to the pitch this week for the Brazilian Championship. On Wednesday, Atlético-MG will host Botafogo. Fortaleza plays at home on Thursday against Goiás.
