Marinho Peres (Mario Peres Ulibarri), a former Brazilian national team player and former football coach, died last Monday. He was 76 years old and had been hospitalized for a month in Brazil. The cause of death was not disclosed by the family.
The former defender played in the 1974 World Cup in Germany and received much praise from Johan Cruyff, the Dutch star who was one of those responsible for Brazil’s elimination from that tournament. Thanks to his performance in the competition, Marinho Peres was signed for Barcelona.

Marinho began his playing career with São Bento in 1965 and ended it in 1981, when he was at America in Rio de Janeiro. He also played for Palmeiras, Portuguesa, Santos, Internacional and Galícia. As a coach, he began his career at America and, 30 years later, in 2011, he left the football world. At the time, he worked at Belenenses, in Portugal.
Peres also coached Santos, Botafogo, União São João, Juventude, Paysandu and, in Portugal, in addition to Belenenses, Sporting, Vitória de Guimarães and Marítimo, among other clubs.
