In November 2023, Fernando Diniz made history with Fluminense by leading the club’s to its CONMEBOL Libertadores title. Months later, the outlook is completely different for the coach, who now finds himself on the hot seat after a weak start to the league.

The Tricolor are bottom in the 2024 Brasileirão standings, with only six points in 10 matches. Right now they find themsleves on a seven-game winless run, as their last win came in April against Vasco da Gama.

Since then, Flu drew twice and lost five games in the Brazilian Serie A:

  • Corinthians 3-0 Fluminense
  • Fluminense 2-2 Atlético Mineiro
  • São Paulo 2-1 Fluminense
  • Fluminense 1-1 Juventude
  • Botafogo 1-0 Fluminense
  • Fluminense 1-2 Atlético Goianiense
  • Cruzeiro 2-0 Fluminense

In between, they achieved victories in the Libertadores and Copa do Brasil, but their current league form remains alarming for a club with much higher aspirations for this season.

In their last defeat in Belo Horizonte, fans displayed banners calling for Diniz’s departure, despite him renewing his contract with the club at the beginning of the year.

Fluminense’s next challenge will be none other than the derby against Flamengo, who are on the rise in the Brazilian league, sitting second just two points behind leaders Botafogo with a game in hand. Without any doubt, the derby’s outcome could be crucial for Diniz’s future.
