The Mexican Under-18 national team announced its first squad in 2024 with the presence of Matheus Reis, a 16-year-old who plays for Fluminense. Born in Mexico City on April 2, 2007, the midfielder is part of a 23-man roster called up by Alex Diego for a training camp that will last until Wednesday, when they will play a friendly match against Toluca.

“It’s an inexplicable feeling to be called up for the Mexican national team for the first time. I’m very happy for the opportunity to explore new horizons and learn more about a new culture,” said Reis, who represented Brazil Under-17 in the past.

Between Mexico and Brazil

Son of Brazilians, Reis was born in the Mexican capital while his father, Elías Luiz do Reis, played for Pumas Morelos in the Mexican second division. Brazil called him up for the South American Under-17 Championship in 2023, but not for the U-17 World Cup later that year.

” I hope to have great training sessions, play well in the friendly, and be happy while I’m here, living this experience,” Reis saidregarding his participation in the training camp with the Mexican Under-17 team.

The young midfielder has been under contract with Fluminense since May 2023. In fact, he was part of the Copa Libertadores-winning roster last year, though he didn’t have playing time throughout the competition.
