In opposite fortunes, it was yet another loss for Athletico as they suffered their third consecutive loss in the competition.
There was lots of drama in the first half as Fluminense even saw two of their goals cancelled in the first half.
Fluminense scored three different times in the first half. The first came in the 24th minute. Luccas Claro took advantage of the rebound of goalkeeper Santos, but it was canceled by the VAR. Commentator Sandro Meira Ricci believes the goal was legal. Then it was Michel Araújo’s turn to score but Luccas Claro’s offside was correctly pointed out. All that really counted was Aguilar’s own goal, it came in the final minute of the first half. He tried to cut Yuri’s cross and sent it into the net.
Without playing in an official game for 21 months, Athletico star Walter returned to the field this Saturday.
He replaced Vinícius Mingotti in the 17th minute of the second half but was unable to do much on his return.
With the victory, Fluminense currently find themselves in sixth place in the Brazilian Championship, with seven points. However, they can still be overtaken by a lot of people who still have outstanding games in the round. Athletico, who lost in the last three rounds, fell to seventh position with six points.
Fluminense will return to the field for the Brazilian Championship next Saturday to play the classic against Vasco at Maracanã. In turn, Athletico faces São Paulo this Wednesday in an early game of the next round.
