On April 9, 2023, the Tricolor defeated Mengao 4-1 in the final of the Campeonato Carioca to win the state title. Since then, they have played 10 city derbies, with a tally of six draws and four defeats.

With 10 derbies without a win, Flu are approaching their worst streak in history. As Globo Esporte notes, the club went up to 13 matches without beating Flamengo, Vasco da Gama, and Botafogo on two occasions. It first happened between 1961 and 1962, but the sequence also took place between 1995 and 1996.
