Fluminense claimed an emphatic 2-1 victory over Internacional at Beira-Rio on Sunday night for the 22nd round of the Brazilian Championship. The hosts opened the scoring with Maurício in the 1st half but they were to be undone in the second half. Lucca leveled matters in stunning fashion just at the beginning of the second half with an Olympic goal. Just when the game looked like it could be going for a stalemate, Caio Paulista scored the all-important goal for Fluminense 10 minutes from time that saw them complete an unlikely comeback.
The goal from ex-Internacional man Lucca was the highlight of the game.
In his first match starting as a starter at Fluminense, Lucca enforced the “ex law” in style. In a corner kick from the left, the attacker surprised with a close hit. Marcelo Lomba fumbled with Digão and saw the ball go straight into the back of the net.
With the victory, Fluminense ended their run of two consecutive defeats, are now up to 35 points and moved three positions up into fifth place. The defeat was another sour one for Inter as it saw them lose their spots to Flamengo and São Paulo. It also meant they have failed to win in their last five Brasileirão outings.
Inter turns their attention to Libertadores to face Boca Juniors next Wednesday also in Beira-Rio. Their next appointment for the Brazilian Championship is on Saturday against Atlético-GO away from home. Fluminense, on the other hand, will have the entire week free and receive Red Bull Bragantino for the Brasileirão only next Monday.
