This Sunday (21), Fluminense Football Club celebrates 122 years of history. On July 21, 1902, the Tricolor das Laranjeiras was founded by Oscar Cox, the pioneer of football in Rio de Janeiro and the club’s first president. To this day, the current Libertadores champion has amassed numerous titles and glories.
The team’s initial colors were gray and white, but due to difficulties in finding gray fabric, they were changed two years later to green, white, and maroon.

Throughout its history, the club has won the Campeonato Carioca 33 times. Additionally, it is a four-time Brazilian champion and the 2007 Copa do Brasil champion. The first Brazilian title was in 1970, with the team known as the “Máquina Tricolor.” In 1984, led by Washington and Assis, the “couple 20,” the Tricolor became champions once again. Later, during the points-based league era, they won two more titles: in 2010 and 2012.
Their most recent achievements were the Libertadores in 2023 and the Recopa Sudamericana in 2024, which thrilled the fans.
In addition to its importance in the Brazilian football scene, Fluminense has produced a series of stars for the Brazilian National Team. Castilho, Altair, Félix, Marco Antônio, and Branco were players from the Tricolor who became world champions wearing the yellow jersey. Furthermore, its stadium, Manoel Schwartz, popularly known as Estádio das Laranjeiras, was the venue for the Brazilian National Team’s first match on July 21, 1914.
