Flu had to push to win it late in the 77th minute of the second half. The winning goal came following a corner kick which defender João Victor headed in to guarantee his side a 1-0 victory. It also saw Flu get half way to securing a place in the round of 16 of the competition to be played on September 24 in Goiânia.
Fluminense only managed to get the lead from an error which granted them an advantage in the return fixture of the match. The game was one with few chances and both sides were cautious in their play al through the ninety minutes.
With this result at Maracanã, Atlético-GO will require more that one goal to lead in goal difference if they want advance to the round of the 16 themselves.
If they manage a draw in the second leg they will lose out to Fluminense, with the Dragons winning on higher goal difference. If they win by one nil, penalties will decide their faith.
The second leg of the match of the Copa do Brasil will be played on Thursday the following week, at the Olympic Games.
But Atlético-GO will face Atlético-MG first at Olímpico, next Saturday for the Brasileirão while Fluminense will go against Sport on Sunday at Ilha do Retiro.
The team that advances to the next round of the Brazil Cup between Atlético-GO and Fluminense will go home with a R $ 2.6 million winner’s fee which will come as an important profit to either side.
