Fluminense and Vasco had to settle for a point apiece following their 1-1 draw on Tuesday in Volta Redonda.
German Cano opened the scoring for Vasco in the 37th minute of the first half before another veteran forward Fred leveled matters for Flu just at the very start of the second half.
Flu was more threatening in the early stages of the first half and Nenê even came close to scoring directly from a corner-kick.
After that, Vasco soon saw a good amount of the ball until they opened the scoring after a brilliant team move.
Just at the start of the second half, Fred rose highest to connect to a corner kick from Nenê to level matters for the hosts. Vasco goalkeeper Lucão was left with no chance.
Fluminense dominated the game after their equalizer and even had chances to complete a comeback.
Vasco thought they had won it when Andrey took a brilliant free kick in the 74th minute, but his curled effort could only hit the woodwork.
For both veteran goal-scorers on the evening, the goals meant something to each of them. For Cano, it was his 25th goal in Vasco colors while Fred moved to within four goals of Orlando Pingo de Ouro, who is the second highest goal-scorer in Flu’s history.
With the result, Vasco remain in eighth place with seven points while Fluminense can boast of 10 points and lie in fourth place. For their next outing, Vasco will take on Bangu at Raulino de Oliveira on Saturday. Elsewhere, Fluminense will take on Macaé on Tuesday but the venue for that clash is still undecided as at the time of writing.
