The defeat against Sao Paulo in the final of the Brazilian Cup put an end to Jorge Sampaoli’s cycle as coach of Flamengo. After having fired the Argentine, the board of directors of the Rio de Janeiro club would have Tite as their favorite candidate, who has not managed since he resigned from the Brazilian team after the elimination in Qatar 2022.

According to  Globo Esporte,  the Mengao leaders intend to take advantage of the FIFA date so that the new technical director has time to get to know the team and have days of work before their first match. However, they would still be far from reaching an agreement as the 62-year-old must decide if he wants to return to work in his native country.

An interest from Europe that never came

Although a lot of time has passed since the last World Cup, the reason why Tite spent these months without working was due to the fact that his intention was to get a position in Europe. However, time has passed and the Brazilian strategist did not have a specific possibility that was seductive enough.

Flamengo planned to continue with Sampaoli until the end of the year and begin the search for a successor for 2024, but the blow suffered in the domestic cup hastened the decision. Mário Jorge took charge of the professional team on an interim basis, and after having achieved the victory against Bahia, he is expected to continue in office at least until the clash with Corinthians next Saturday (7).

With 43 points in 25 games, Mengao is fifth in the Brasileirao.

Flamengo’s next matches

  • vs. Corinthians – Saturday 7/10 (away)
  • vs. Cruzeiro – Thursday 10/19 (visitor)
  • vs. Vasco da Gama – Sunday 10/22 (local)
