It seemed like it was waiting to happen but maybe this was not expected so soon. Just days after Rogerio Ceni spoke about the pressure on his job at the club, he has been given his marching orders.
Surprisingly, reports claimed the manager had the full backing of the club at least for now so it surely means those claims were wrong or new developments emerged in the past few days.
On Saturday morning, the red-black board announced the coach’s resignation. Maurício Souza led the team against Chapecoense at Maracanã on Sunday, a game which they came from behind to win 2-1 via two late goals from De Arrascaeta and Michael.
Renato Gaucho arrives as Ceni’s successor
In a quick turn of events, former player Renato Gaucho was named the club’s new manager after negotiations progressed swiftly.
Flamengo made the announcement on their social networks early this Saturday night, with a photo of Renato wearing the red-black shirt in his playing days. In the second half of the 80’s, the then forward had two remarkable spells at the club, with the 1987 Brazilian title as a high point. When he started his coaching career, Renato always made it clear that he wanted to lead Flamengo. He has now gotten his wish.
The idea is for Renato to travel with the team to Argentina on Monday and make his debut in the game with Defensa y Justicia, on Wednesday, in the first game of the Libertadores round of 16.
Flamengo offered the manager a contract until the end of the year with automatic renewal in case of reelection of President Landim. The salary is higher than what Ceni earned, but much lower than what Renato received at Grêmio.
In 45 games for Flamengo, Rogério Ceni had 23 wins, 11 draws and 11 defeats – 59.2% of success. He won three titles: Brazilian Championship, Supercopa and Carioca. Renato’s goal is to surpass his predecessor in numbers and also in the fans’ admiration.
