Flamengo bowed out of the Libertadores da América via penalties after playing to a 2-2 draw on aggregate with Racing Club. The Argentine side advanced to the quarter finals in a big result that saw the defending champions sent home.
The game ended one-all after Willian Arão proved to be the hero in the 93rd minute but later turned villain
after losing his own spot kick in the shootout which saw Racing win 5-3.
Flamengo had the match under control for quite some time and all they lacked was a finishing touch to their chances created.
Fla kept possession of the ball but they soon conceded a goal in the 65th minute after Rodrigo Caio was sent off after receiving his second yellow card two minutes earlier. Racing opened the scoring through Sigali after Bruno Henrique failed to make a clearance.
The game looked to be over for Flamengo until Diego took a corner kick and Willian Arão met the cross to head home the equalizing goal in the 93rd minute. He was the hero for Fla at that point.
However, Arão had his penalty saved by the Racing goalkeeper after opting for a strong hit straight in the middle during the penalty shootouts. From hero of the game, he quickly became the villain.
In only three weeks at the helm of affairs, Rogério Ceni is already under scrutiny after Fla were eliminated by São Paulo in the Brazil Cup and has now failed to advance to the quarter finals in the Libertadores which they won last year under Jorge Jesus.
As it stands, the Brasileirão is the only competition Flamengo have left to play for.
For their next outing, Flamengo will take to the pitch against Botafogo on Saturday at Estádio Nilton Santos for the 24th round of the Brasileirão.
