The International Center for Sports Studies (CIES) published a list of the 100 teams that have invested the most in the formation of their current squads. Manchester United heads the list, but the novelty is marked by the presence of two Brazilian giants, Flamengo and Palmeiras.
The ‘Red Devils’ would have invested a total of 1.15 billion euros for the footballers who are part of their squad today. Chelsea and Manchester City are the other teams that complete the podium.
Flamengo and Palmeiras in the top 100
Mengão, one of the most popular clubs in Brazil, ranks 49th with an investment of almost 160 million euros. Palmeiras, for its part, is in position 95 with expenses that reach 60 million. Thus, these two Brazilian teams demonstrate their ability to compete in terms of expenses with some of the largest teams in Europe.

Rankings by league and country
The CIES rankings also reveal impressive diversity in terms of countries represented: 19 different leagues are on the list.
The English Premier League dominates with 19 teams, followed by the Italian Serie A with 15 clubs. The Spanish LaLiga and the German Bundesliga have 12 representatives, while the French Ligue 1 has 11 among the 100.
Outside the European continent, Saudi Arabia stands out with four clubs: Al-Hilal, Al-Ahli, Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad. On the other side of the ocean, Mexico also makes its mark with three teams: Monterrey, Tigres and Club América. In addition to Flamengo and Palmeiras, River Plate (Argentina) is the third South American club on the list.
