Flamengo were nothing short of disgraced and suffered the worst Libertadores defeat of their history after a 5-0 loss to Independiente del Valle on Thursday in Quito, Ecuador. The match was valid for the third round of Group A of the Libertadores.
After ups and downs at the beginning of Domènec Torrent‘s work, Flamengo experienced its worst performance under the coach’s command. The team did not take any fight to Del Valle who dominated from start to finish. In the second half, the home team controlled the match at a training pace and a whooping four goals came in the space of 45 minutes.
Del Valle dominated most of the first half but had to wait until 40 minutes till they broke the deadlock.
Moisés Caicedo starred in a beautiful lightning strike, receiving in sequence to open the scoring. The first half ended that way and things got interesting in the second half.
Three minutes into the second half, Preciado added a second for with a beautiful shot from outside the area. Nine minutes later, it was Gabriel Torres’ turn to hit another brilliant shot that made it 3-0.
In the 81st minute, Jhon Sánchez received a cross and finished with precision to score the fourth goal for the home side. Finally, in the second minute of extra time, Beder Caicedo hit another shot from outside the area that crept into the net as well.
It got worse for Domènec Torrent after Bruno Henrique was given a red card in the final stages of the game.
With the defeat, Flamengo gets six points, in second place in Group A. Del Valle has nine points and is isolated in the leadership of the group. Fla will return to the field next Tuesday, against Barcelona-EQU, in Ecuador. Independiente del Valle faces Junior, in Barranquilla, on the same date.
