Flamengo edged out Volta Redonda to lift the Guanabara Cup on Sunday. The 2-1 victory for Fla also saw them advance to the semi-finals of the Carioca Championship.
Despite a largely rotated team with the Libertadores in sight, Flamengo did just enough to defeat their opponents and claim another trophy, which characteristically had a different format this year.
Michael opened the scoring just in the first minute of stoppage time in the first half. However, Volta drew level through Bruno Barra four minutes later to ensure the first half ended all square. Vitinho then scored the winning goal just after the hour-mark that secured Fla’s passage into the semifinal via a shot from outside the area.
With the win, Flamengo moved up to 23 points and claimed first place, alongside a spot in the semifinal of the Carioca Championship. Fla will have the choice of picking whether their advantage would come in the first or second leg.
After securing first position, Flamengo will then take on Fluminense who thrashed Madureira 4-1 in another game on Sunday.
Before their next fixture in the semifinals of the Carioca Championship, Flamengo will first of all switch their focus to the Libertadores. Next Tuesday, they will welcome Unión La Calera to Maracanã for the second fixture in their group stage game. On the other hand, Voltaço, on the other hand, will wait for the result of the state games to see when they will be scheduled for their next clash as they aim to secure a spot in the finals.
