The State of São Paulo have switched to a more restrictive phase in their competition to avoid the spread of Covid-19. These measures started since the 6th of March and they are taken as preventive steps to avoid any outbreak.
The São Paulo government predicts a collapse in the health system by March 15 if no measures are taken to stop the coronavirus that is growing more and more in the country. Over the past few weeks, numbers have been on the rise each day.
Although only essential services like pharmacies and supermarkets are open, nothing affects religious services, masses and games so far.
The Paulista Championship started three days after the end of the Brasileirão 2020, won by Flamengo.
This weekend, Santos and São Paulo took locked horns and it was São Paulo who won with a resounding 4-0 score-line in a game defined by two Argentine managers.
According to Uol Esportes, the Sports Secretariat of the State of São Paulo reported that cities in any phase of the São Paulo Plan can receive matches from the Paulista Championship.
“Since the protocol presented by the São Paulo Football Federation and approved by the Contingency Center to Covid-19 provides for frequent testing, isolation of positive cases and daily monitoring of athletes and other members”. He commented.
The move from São Paulo to the red phase, the most restrictive phase, happens after the increase of cases in the last days. This comes in the same week that Brazil reached the mark of 1,726 deaths, the highest since the virus plagued the country.
