The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes, annulled the removal of Ednaldo Rodrigues from the presidency of the CBF.
After being out of command for 27 days, the “former” current president returns to the command of the entity.
To prevent punishment
The Minister claimed that Brazil could be excluded from international competitions, such as the 2026 World Cup, in addition to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. See part of Gilmar Mendes’ decision:
“The deadline for registration of the Brazilian football team, current two-time Olympic champion, in the qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is approaching tomorrow (5.1.2024), an act that could become unfeasible if carried out by a leader not accredited by the institutions. competent international institutions”.

Ednaldo away
The controversy that culminated in Ednaldo’s departure from command of the CBF arose from an action related to his election as president in the period from 2022 to 2026.
His ascension to the position took place in August 2021, replacing Rogério Caboclo, who was removed due to allegations of moral and sexual harassment.
Ednaldo, backed by the support of 23 of the 27 state federations, succeeded Caboclo’s mandate.
However, during his tenure, Ednaldo tried to end a 2015 lawsuit involving clubs from Series A and B, which sought the right to vote in the presidency of the CBF.
The proposed agreement with the Public Ministry was accepted by the clubs, resulting in the elections being brought forward in 2022, when Ednaldo was elected for the term from 2022 to 2026.
However, the vice-elects elected for the period from 2017 to 2023 in the Caboclo administration contested the decision, alleging loss of a year in office, which led to a legal dispute.
The Court of Justice, in its decision on December 7, claimed that the Public Ministry did not have the legitimacy to judge the case and make the agreement in 2022, annulling the early election.
New elections suspended
The president of the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice), José Perdiz, took command of the CBF and was expected to call new elections within the next 30 working days.
The deadline, therefore, would be until the week of January 22, 2024 to choose a new representative at the CBF. With Ednaldo’s return, the elections are suspended for now.
The elections for president should take place in March 2023, for the “correct” period of Ednaldo’s term. The president, in an interview with VEJA magazine, has already stated that he will not run for re-election:
“We need to wait for the mission of FIFA and Conmebol, and also the decisions of the Court, to understand the scenario and have some definition. For my part, I have talked a lot with my family and made a commitment: my time for electoral disputes is over.”
