Manchester City continued their dominance in the Premier League with a 3-0 thrashing of Tottenham, extending their winning streak to a record 16 games.
It was perhaps written in the stars that Ederson was to get in on the goal contributions at the Etihad.
The Brazilian is well known for his ball-playing prowess and on some occasions, it has gotten the better of him. However, there was none of that on his latest outing.
Manchester City have struggled with penalties of late and Guardiola recently mentioned that the goalkeeper could be put in charge of spot-kick duties moving forward.
Coincidentally or not, City were awarded a penalty in the first half and Ederson was already halfway through the pitch on his way to take the spot-kick. However, he was stopped by Bernardo Silva and Rodri stepped up to score the penalty but not convincingly. Hugo Lloris got a hand to it and should have even saved it.
Five minutes into the second half, Gundogan, the Premier League’s most in-form player of 2021, scored another brilliant goal from a good team effort.
In the 66th minute, Ederson then stole the headlines as he spotted the run of Gundogan once again. The German made no mistake and spurned Davinson Sanchez before firing home. It was a brilliant assist by the goalkeeper and marked his second in the Premier League.
It is perhaps no surprise that Ederson is in the running for the Samba gold award, alongside teammate Gabriel Jesus who had a quiet evening. On the opposition side, Brazilian forward Lucas Moura barely saw much of the ball to do anything tangible. He is also in contention to win the prestigious award.
With the result, Ederson is now up to 14 Premier League clean sheets for the season, more than any other goalkeeper at the moment.
