In a game where both sides finished with ten men, Grêmio came out on top 2-1 winners against La Equidad on Thursday night to start their Copa Sudamericana campaign on a good note.
Diego Souza and Paulo Miranda scored for the home side, one in each half.
Duarte scored late on for the visitors but it only turned out to be consolation.
However, the talking point of the game wasn’t even a player on the pitch. New coach Tiago Nunes arrived in Porto Alegre just before the game and was officially presented on Friday.
Tiago Nunes watched the game in one of the executive booths. During the game, his assistants and the rest of his technical team also arrived at the stadium. He will officially make his debut on Saturday, against Ypiranga on Saturday.
Back to the game, Diego Souza continues to show his worth for Grêmio even under new management. Once again, he proved to be the key man in the game after scoring via a brilliant header. He also setup the second for Paulo Miranda to double the lead after the expulsion of Rodrigues.
With the win, Grêmio top Group H with three points alongside Lanús who also saw off Aragua in the other game of the group. It is important to note that only the leader qualifies for the round of 16.
Grêmio return to the pitch against Ypiranga, in a game valid for the Gauchão. The following Thursday, Tricolor return to Libertadores action against Lanús. La Equidad’s next outing for the Libertadores is against Aragua, in Colombia.
